Jeep Club members tackle Rendezvous roads
---Jackson Hole News & Guide, Sept. 27, 2017

Six Jeeps ascended through the clouds and into the snowy environment that capped the upper 2,000 feet of slopes last Friday at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

The drivers were not on a typical outing, although the slow cruise through elevated, rugged mountain terrain was similar to the crew’s usual get-togethers. They typically ride together along dirt roads in areas such as Cliff Creek and Fisherman’s Creek near Bondurant, and other Wyoming backcountry roads open to motor vehicles.

But over the weekend the like-minded four-wheel-drive enthusiasts were able to scale the service roads of the ski resort. It was a privilege that had never before been provided to recreational drivers.

The Jackson Hole Jeep Club members were joined by drivers from the club’s sponsor, Rocky Mountain Yeti.

Fred Vatter runs fixed operations for Yeti throughout western Wyoming. On behalf of Yeti he approached the resort about hosting a variety of Jeeps on the mountain’s roads. And the resort gave him the go-ahead for the rare event.

“We wanted to approach this very cautiously,” Vatter said. “We arranged a meeting and pitched the scope and the general idea. We had a great first meeting and a better second meeting, and all systems were a go.”

It didn’t hurt that long-standing Jeep Club member John Bishop is a resort employee.

“Yeti approached us with a concept of putting on a jamboree in Jackson Hole,” Bishop said. “We thought it would be an interesting opportunity, a unique event, to bring some folks up here.

“It’s the first time the resort has done anything like this,” he said. “It’s a neat idea we can build off of moving forward.”

The Rendezvous Jeep Rally is slated to be an annual event at the resort, and it’s just one of the ways the club engages its 124 members.
