2017 Cherokee ready for off-road adventuring.

When our clocks “spring ahead” it’s a sign that the best driving season is out there waiting, and the new Jeep Cherokee is ready it, both on the road and off-road.

That's Jeep's big news this year: Models designed to showcase off-tarmac abilities. The hero is the new Trailhawk version of the Grand Cherokee.

 

What makes a Grand Cherokee a Trailhawk? Among other things, a standard 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, with Quadra-Drive II 4WD. The wheels are kept at a modest 18-inch size—better for off-roading—and the Goodyear Adventure tire sidewalls are reinforced with Kevlar. Tow hooks are standard. 

The Trailhawk is identifiable by its anti-glare hood decal, special badging, and red accents. Inside, its black interior has tailored seats and a special feature in the 8.4-inch UConnect screen called "off-road pages", which shows you wheel articulation, suspension height, and the status of the five mode Selec-Terrain controller. 

The three available four-wheel-drive setups include Active Drive I, a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II has a 2-speed transfer case designed for off-road use with either the 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Lastly, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. It’s standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, a model also outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by an inch), skid plates, and unique wheels with all-terrain rubber.

Even on standard tires inflated to road pressure, the Trailhawk still takes on grass, mud and suspension-stretching ruts in fine fashion.

The rest of the Grand Cherokee range has also had a refresh for 2017. All models have picked up the grille and front fascia from last year's 75th-anniversary model and reversing camera/rear sensors are standard across the range. There are new LED daytime running lights and the UConnect touch screen has improved connectivity and graphics.
