There's a new predator in the muscle car jungle, and it's a Hellcat.
Recently at last unveiled, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the kind of fire-breathing, earthrumbling, awe-inducing stud of a vehicle that seems possible of engendering virtually every visceral reaction imaginable.
Skeptical? Okay, try this. The SRT Hellcat features a wild, 6.2L supercharged V8 Hemi engine with 707 HP generating 650 foot pounds of torque, the loftiest power figure of any V8 engine in Chrysler history. Repeat, in Chrysler history.
Numerically speaking, the Hellcat brings 45 more horsepower than the last Shelby Mustang GT500, 127 more than the last Camaro ZL1 tested, and, in what may be viewed as an act of sacrilege by some, 67 more than the V-10 in the current Viper.
Its top speed is 199 mph, and is estimated to move its 4,439 pounds curb weight from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
This riff from one reviewer is too good not to share. "The sounds the Hellcat made were intoxicating. It rumbles and growls. There's bass. A whine announced the supercharger's presence and then the V8 opens up to a flat-out howl. The exhaust cackles. Modern engines sound great, but the Hellcat has an old-school anger."
Truly the stuff Saturday night dreams are made of.
